Ballade is a short piece for mixed ensemble. It is programmatic in the sense that it has a slightly dreamy opening which leads to a pastoral section where the oboe leads with a rising and falling theme. At Poco più mosso the pace becomes more urgent as we continue the pastoral theme, running through fields, chasing small animals.
Then at letter C, the pace becomes more somnolent as the afternoon wears on. The artificial harmonics in the strings with their glassy brittle sound denote the bright midday sun. The winds are languid and drawn out as sleep draws a veil over the afternoon. |
