Sonata for Horn and Piano

News 07.07.2018, 09:29

Sudden inspiration came to me at 6:15 this morning and the result is the first movement of a sonata for horn and piano. This is a jaunty piece, after a slower introduction,  of approximately 4 minutes in length. All the ideas, bar one, are included in the opening slower section and after they have all be stated they are thrown into the mixing pot and allowed to develop. The horn and piano have nearly equal roles in this piece and there is much dialogue between them as they pass the various ...

New suite of Dowland madrigals for brass quartet

News 18.06.2018, 08:35

Just posted today, and on sale sometime tomorrow a new setting of five of John Dowland's stunningly beautiful madrigals, including "Come Again, Sweet Love", "Shall I Strive", "Now, Alas, I Needs Must Part", "Go Crystall Teares" and "In This Trembling Shadow". In the near future I must do some more of these because they are so gorgeous. These will have to do for now to whet your appetite!

Slow and steady wins the race - eventually!

News 14.06.2018, 17:37

Well, what can I say? Progress is slow in getting book 7 of the madrigals finished. The biggest issue is that, as the music becomes more and more complex, it becomes mre and more difficult to 'thin out the herd' and so I have had to accept the fact that some of these beautiful songs will have to be cast with larger ensembles. This also means that I have to be really careful about voice leading, harmonic progression and other considerations. Another kicker is that, in this book, the final songs are ...

Busy, Busy, Busy...

News 21.05.2018, 08:32

March, April and May 2018 have seen a rapid increase in my own compositions. Spring seems to have put a spring into my musical step. Most importantly, I have written three completely new sonatas for unaccompanied French Horn. These works are each between 10 and 15 minutes long and can be played as complete sonatas or you can pick and choose movements for your recital programmes. The French Horn is an unusual development for me, as is writing for unaccompanied instruments. I found the work challenging ...

News 16.04.2018, 17:06

An update to this series. There are now two pieces by Mozart and four by Verdi on the site. They are all reasonably priced (under $10) so why not take a punt on these excellent arrangements for your summer programmes.

A new "Famous Composers" series is born

News 12.04.2018, 16:54

I am happy to announce that I am now releasing a series of pieces by famous composers for brass quintet or sextet. Composers include Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Verdi. Released today (12th April) are three works by Beethoven and five by Mendelssohn. Soon to follow will be arias from Verdi and Mozart and a number of other works which are more or less well known (especially if you are a Classic FM listener.) Don't knock it! These pieces are great as audience pleasers.

Monteverdi Marches On Into March!

News 26.02.2018, 07:35

I've finally managed to more-or-less complete book 7 of my marathon setting of Monteverdi's Madrigals. As I carry on, I keep marvelling at the diversity of this music as it progresses from simple collections of songs towards full operatic status. By the time I get all of book 7 published we will be well into March. It often seems that people in the Renaissance were obsessed with sex and romantic affairs, but out of this obsession come some of the most beautiful and spiritual expressions of love. ...

More new news!

News 29.01.2018, 09:15

I have just uploaded Sultry Nights for Cello with piano accompaniment. The melody is so versatile it can be played on almost any instrument. If you are a cellist, if you teach one, or if you know one who is looking for some new music, this could be just what you need. It would be excellent as a GCSE recital piece. The music is very expressive and makes much use of dynamic and rhythmic contrasts.

New for January 2018 - Brass Band March - Marching through the pain

News 26.01.2018, 15:42

As a bass player, we've all done it. We've been marching along and unexpectedly gone into a pothole, or walked into bollards or posts. This march is dedicated to all those long-suffering players who have at some time fallen foul of the street furniture or the poor road surfaces with which this country is strewn! Enjoy

A Little Night Music

News 14.12.2017, 18:02

I have arranged Eine Kleine Nachtmusik for brass sextet. The separate movements are available, as well as the whole thing. I have joined together the Romanza and the Minuet and Trio because they are both quite short. Parts are available for Cornet/Trumpet 1 and 2, Horn in Eb and F, Trombone (Bass/Treble), Euphonium (Bass/Treble) and Tuba/Eb Bass (Bass/Treble). The arrangement is quite demanding in terms of bot range and technique. It will tests the tongues of every member of the ensemble and ...
